Shallow relief is the name I have given to a series of painting adjacent wall reliefs - painted cast polyurethane wall pieces I Started in around 2008 or 2009. had come to a point where I was experimenting with found picture frames - building them up under layers of putty and paint. I wanted to explore the overworked qualities of these pieces - in contrast to the collages i was doing with the found pictures earlier - so tenuously held they could fall apart at any moment. The new works use the logic of encasement - making new pieces are made by burying a previous work in layers of plasticine and then making casts of the result. To a degree the work becomes sealed off - hermetic- impenetrable it has passed from being an image to being an object - but there are latent images and an emergent organic abstraction.
